KOPIN, a member of Destination Unknown, a global network of organisations and young people committed to ensuring that the rights of children and young people on the move are respected and protected, has teamed up with local singer and songwriter Nick Morales to promote his latest track “People of the Sea”, launched today – the World Refugee Day.

Nick explains that the concept of “Sea people” first penetrated our generation’s radar in the 2000s when the press started reporting the arrival of boats filled with immigrants from neighbouring Libya. In public opinion, the threat these boat people posed to our “small and already over-populated landmass” by far outweighed their humanity from the start.

This beautiful acoustic track, with its calming ebbs and flows, carries the listener through these motions, in a tone so unassuming, one might not have realised the gravity of the song’s motif, not even recognising the African percussive as they break the rhythm, playfully beating out their heartbreaking plea until the visuals are added. An altogether explorative and deeply moving piece, that will surely stand out as many people’s favourite from among Nick’s recent creative releases.

Being no stranger to human rights activism and having spent time meeting migrants and listening to their stories, Nick immediately accepted KOPIN’s offer to promote “People of the Sea” with the vast network of youths in various countries taking part in the newly set up Destination Unkown Youth – the younger branch of the Destination Unkown project led by Kopin’s close partner Terre des Hommes, which is one of the world’s biggest federations of organisations working for the rights and protection of children.
