Migration and Sustainable Development: Implications on Schools and Teachers (Session 2 of 2)

Course Description

Migration is not a new phenomenon. However, it has become a pressing issue due to the seemingly large number of people who are leaving their native land to seek a better life elsewhere. These sessions aim to explore what motivates or constrains people to migrate.  Moreover, we shall explore the links between migration and sustainable development.  Further into the session, the participants will consider the impact migration has on the host society, particularly on schools.

The Session

Introduction

Think about immigration in Malta. Can you create a list of your perceptions of the impact immigration has had on Maltese society? Which are the negative impacts? Which are the positive ones? How did you learn of these effects of migration? Where can you check to see if what you think is true?

Have you ever had immigrant children in your class or at your school?

How would you feel if/how do you feel when there are immigrant children in your class? Stop and think about these feelings you have. Write them down.

If you write “I feel I cannot address their needs” try to come up with ideas as to why you feel inadequate. Through this exercise, you will be able to identify your needs, fears, and/or accomplishments. Moreover, you can further classify these concerns – e.g. structural (in terms of space, bureaucracy etc), professional (in terms of training), ethical (in terms of student entitlement), and so on.

Now try and identify possible points of support: e.g. NGOs, the Directorate, Literacy Agency,  peers, and so on.

Watch the two videos: ‘To be happy’, and, ‘What the US could learn from Canada’. These two videos are not aimed to show a perfect situation, but to show some good practices, that would make your school life and that of migrant students a more pleasant experience.
