Every child has a right to an education. And every young person has a right to a fair chance – a chance to learn, to equip her or himself with the skills and training needed for the modern world. But it’s not always easy for everyone to enjoy these rights, or to access them.

For this reason, Kopin and JRS Malta are implementing the Education Support Programme (ESP) that will help refugee and migrant children and youths gain better access to education and training.

The ESP is made possible thanks to funds raised through the 1RUN initiative by ultrarunners Patrick Tabone and Claudio Camilleri, to which countless individuals, as well as corporate sponsors, have contributed.  In July of 2020, Claudio and Patrick ran an unbelievable 190 kilometres around Malta and Gozo in just 35 hours. The Programme is further supported by UNHCR Malta.

The ESP offers a number of packages aimed at enabling individuals to access or continue primary education, secondary education or sixth form, to access Higher Educational institutions, or to improve their employability.

Funds are being used, amongst others, for:

  • Tuition and fees for English language and other courses as needed
  • Tablets and laptops that can be used by pupils and students
  • Books, desks and other educational materials
  • Examination fees
  • Mentorship and guidance by Kopin and JRS staff
